Step into a new form of minimalism by mixing materials and colours that generally don’t match.

Minimalism and Japanese interiors have for a long time been using this type of balance to create interiors that make you feel relaxed. This type of interior design is attuned for someone who wants to show off their decor in a restrained way. You are likely to not have a lot of material things or perhaps have enough space and cabinetry to store this away. Needless to say, this style requires a bit of patience and one who wants a curated home.

Cold and warm tones are becoming the new yin and yang of the interior design scene. When you master this type of style for your interiors it opens up your ability to decorate the seemingly cold with the organic natural elements of wood it creates a calm mature style. The cold, stale and very hard material that is concrete or stainless steel (yin) goes well with black and white and can be kept cool and fresh just like that, but with a bit of warmth, the strong yang energy of golden and deep tones of woods like oak and walnut can create the perfect harmony. Given you follow some design tips. Luckily, you’re in the right place because some are just a scroll below.

We see this rising in popularity in 2024 and likely to be considered a trend very soon. You may see this balance already in New Zealand, like in cafes like 186 ( images below) and others like Rumours and Ozone Coffee.

Here are a few ways that you can try in your own home.

  • Choose a base and accent. Concrete can be the main character and wood the side. This will help to keep the space from feeling too cold or sterile. We like the idea of a concrete kitchen bench with a stainless steel top complemented by deep oak wooden shelving , or a concrete fireplace with wooden in-build cabinetry surrounding it.

  • Using the warm and organic tones of wood to soften the look of concrete. Concrete can be quite stark on its own, but adding wood can help to warm it up and make it more inviting. For example, you could add a wooden rug to a concrete floor, or wooden chairs with white cushions to a concrete dining table.

  • Use large plants to add color and life to really tie in the elements together. Plants are a healthy and inviting way to help to break up the cool tones of concrete and add a touch of warmth. A large potted olive tree or a large dried floral arrangement could really show your style and flair.

  • Home decor and cabinetry. These are a subtle and strong way to add a touch of your own style to your home decor. We love the idea of a drinks area that uses stainless steel coffee or mixology accessories to complement a wooden table. See our latest arrivals for some of this.
